The Disturbing Case of Marcus Vula and Mayang Prasetio: A Shocking True Crime Story!
Imagine living in an expensive apartment building where everything appears perfectly normal.
Then, one day, an unbearable smell begins drifting through the hallway.
At first, neighbors assume someone has burned food.
But the smell doesn't disappear.
Instead, it gets worse.
When the apartment's owner finally enters the property, he notices something far more disturbing than spoiled food—a trail of what appears to be dried blood on the floor.
The tenant gives him an explanation.
It sounds harmless.
But the property owner isn't convinced.
Without confronting him, he quietly photographs the stains and contacts the police.
When officers arrive, the tenant opens the door and asks for a few minutes to secure his dog.
He then walks into the bedroom.
The door closes.
And he never comes back out.
Police eventually force their way inside.
The bedroom is empty.
The window is open.
The tenant has escaped.
But the real horror is waiting in the kitchen.
On top of a damaged electric stove sits a large metal cooking pot.
Inside are human remains.
So, who was the victim?
And who was the man desperately trying to hide what had happened inside that apartment?
To understand the tragedy, we have to go back several years.
A Double Life!
Marcus Vula was born in 1986 in Ballarat, Australia.
His family operated a restaurant, and martial arts were also part of their lives. Growing up around food and professional kitchens, Marcus eventually decided to become a chef himself.
On the surface, everything appeared to be going well.
He trained in the culinary field, found employment, and seemed to be building a respectable life.
But underneath that image, serious problems were developing.
By around 2012, Marcus had become heavily involved in gambling. The losses accumulated.
Then came the debts.
His regular income was no longer enough to cover what he owed, so he began searching for another way to make money.
That search eventually led him into the adult-services industry.
He created an online profile and began meeting clients for cash.
Later, Marcus moved to Melbourne, where he found employment at an adult entertainment venue known as Pleasure Dome.
This allowed him to maintain two completely different identities.
By day, he could present himself as a chef.
At night, he earned additional money through private clients.
His family knew nothing about this second life.
But some of his colleagues saw another side of him.
According to the account, Marcus could be volatile and difficult to deal with. More troublingly, he sometimes carried a firearm while working.
He was living under financial pressure, hiding major parts of his life, and becoming increasingly dependent on money from unconventional sources.
Then another person entered his world.
Mayang's Hidden Life
Several years earlier, in Indonesia, a child named Fabri Andreansia had been born.
Fabri later came to identify as a woman and eventually became known as Mayang Prasetio.
According to the account, Mayang struggled to gain acceptance from her family, particularly from her mother.
Much of her early support came from her grandmother.
As the oldest of three children, Mayang also felt responsible for helping financially support her family.
She initially worked in beauty-related jobs, including hair styling and nail services.
But those jobs did not provide enough money for the life she wanted—or for the people depending on her.
Eventually, she traveled to Thailand and underwent gender-affirming medical procedures.
After returning, she presented a different explanation for her income to relatives.
She claimed that she had established herself as an overseas model.
That story helped explain the money she was sending home to support her family and her younger siblings.
The reality, according to the account, was that she was earning money through adult services.
By 2012, she had moved to Australia.
Melbourne offered her access to wealthier clients and, in her view, an opportunity to live with greater freedom.
She eventually began working at Pleasure Dome.
That was where she met Marcus.
A Marriage Built on Mutual Need
At first glance, Marcus and Mayang might have seemed like an unlikely couple.
But both had something the other desperately needed.
Marcus was struggling financially.
Mayang needed a path toward legal residency in Australia.
Their relationship therefore became more than romance.
It was also practical.
Marcus benefited financially from Mayang's income, while marriage to an Australian citizen could potentially help Mayang establish a more secure immigration status.
The couple traveled to Indonesia together so Marcus could meet Mayang's family.
During that visit, he reportedly made a good impression.
Eventually, they returned to Australia and continued their relationship.
In August 2013, while traveling through Copenhagen aboard a cruise ship, the couple officially registered their marriage.
There was no elaborate wedding.
The important thing was that the marriage was now legally documented.
Afterward, they established a home together in Brisbane.
They rented an apartment in an affluent area and even had a dog.
Those details could help demonstrate the appearance of a genuine shared household.
But behind the front door, their relationship was becoming increasingly unstable.
When Home Became a Workplace
Both Marcus and Mayang continued working in adult services.
That created an unusual problem.
They were living together while both using the apartment as part of their work arrangements.
Their schedules had to be carefully coordinated.
If one person brought a client home, the other needed to stay away.
Sometimes that meant finding another place to go.
As their schedules became increasingly complicated, mistakes began happening.
Appointments overlapped.
Arguments followed.
And according to neighbors, those arguments became loud and aggressive.
People living nearby reportedly heard shouting, profanity, and things being broken inside the apartment.
But there was another source of tension.
Mayang knew details about Marcus that his family didn't know.
She knew about his debts.
She knew about his hidden work.
And she knew about his marriage.
That gave her enormous leverage over him.
During arguments, she allegedly threatened to reveal his secrets to his parents.
For Marcus, exposure could destroy the carefully constructed image he had maintained for years.
He couldn't easily leave the relationship either.
He was financially dependent on Mayang.
The two were trapped in a toxic cycle.
And eventually, that cycle reached its breaking point.
October 2, 2014
On October 2, Marcus arranged to meet a client at the apartment.
He apparently believed Mayang wasn't there.
But when he entered the property, he discovered that his wife was already inside with someone else.
Their carefully negotiated arrangement had failed.
An argument followed.
Mayang reportedly became furious and ordered Marcus to leave.
Embarrassed in front of his client, Marcus walked away.
But the confrontation didn't end there.
Mayang called him.
Then called again.
The dispute continued.
Eventually, Marcus told his client that his dog had suddenly become ill and canceled the appointment.
He returned to the apartment.
What happened afterward became the subject of a horrifying investigation.
Neighbors heard a prolonged argument.
There was shouting.
There were loud impacts.
And the confrontation continued for hours.
Then, around 2 a.m. on October 3, the building was shaken by another burst of noise.
Residents heard Mayang screaming.
Doors slammed.
The disturbance became serious enough that some neighbors considered contacting emergency services.
Then something strange happened.
Everything stopped.
Suddenly.
The apartment became completely silent.
The neighbors assumed the couple had finally gone to bed.
They had no idea that something irreversible had happened behind the closed door.
The Cleanup
By October 3, a strange odor had begun spreading through the building.
Residents noticed it.
One neighbor even tried spraying air freshener around the apartment door.
Inside, Marcus remained isolated.
Hours passed.
Then, around 8 p.m., security footage captured him leaving the building.
He went to a nearby supermarket.
What he purchased was highly suspicious:
- Bleach
- Rubber gloves
- Large plastic bags
- Rope
- Duct tape
He returned to the apartment carrying the supplies.
According to the account, Marcus then began attempting to clean up and conceal what had happened.
Some remains were reportedly placed inside plastic bags and hidden in the washing machine.
But while handling the remains, Marcus seriously injured his hand.
The wound was severe enough that he eventually sought medical treatment.
At the hospital, he reportedly gave doctors a false explanation.
He claimed that he had been involved in a fight with a girlfriend and had injured his hand while trying to defend himself against a knife attack.
Doctors treated the wound and discharged him.
But Marcus still had a massive problem.
The evidence was inside his apartment.
He allegedly decided to use his cooking experience to destroy the remains.
A large metal pot was placed on the stove.
The remains went inside.
Chemicals were added.
And the stove was left running at an extremely high temperature.
That decision created another problem.
The electrical system could not handle the prolonged load.
The stove eventually failed.
And that mechanical failure would expose everything.
The Discovery
Because the stove had stopped working, Marcus needed an electrician.
The electrician needed access to the building's main electrical panel.
That meant the apartment's owner had to come to the property.
When the owner entered, he immediately noticed the blood stains.
He photographed them and contacted police.
Officers arrived.
Marcus answered the door.
He asked for a short amount of time to secure his dog.
Then he disappeared into the bedroom.
When police forced the door open, they discovered the window standing open.
Marcus was gone.
But he hadn't gotten far.
Investigators entered the kitchen and discovered the source of the terrible smell.
The large pot contained human remains.
The apartment was now a crime scene.
Police launched a search for Marcus.
Tracking dogs were brought in.
The trail led investigators only a short distance from the apartment.
Then it ended at a large industrial dumpster.
Inside, officers discovered Marcus.
He had apparently taken his own life after realizing that the police had uncovered what he had been trying to hide.
Toxicology later reportedly found no alcohol or prohibited drugs in his system.
The case therefore ended without a conventional criminal trial.
The suspected killer was dead.
The Final Tragedy
Investigators identified the remains as those of Mayang Prasetio.
Her remains were eventually returned to Indonesia.
But what happened afterward shocked many people.
Mayang's mother, Nining Sukarnney, gave a public statement.
Rather than focusing solely on the loss of her child, she reportedly expressed sympathy toward Marcus's family and apologized for the possibility that Mayang had somehow contributed to the circumstances leading to her death.
For many observers, that reaction was difficult to understand.
The final indignity came during Mayang's burial. Her family did not publicly recognize her identity as Mayang.
Instead, she was buried under the male name she had been given at birth.
An older photograph was reportedly placed on the gravestone.
The person she had spent years trying to become was effectively erased at the end of her life.
And that makes this case more than a story about one violent crime.
It is also a story about secrecy, financial desperation, family pressure, identity, manipulation, and two people whose lives became increasingly dependent on a web of lies.
One secret supported another.
One problem created another.
And eventually, the entire structure collapsed.
The most disturbing part may be that the tragedy didn't begin with one single moment.
It developed slowly—through debt, fear, dependence, resentment, and secrets that became impossible to keep hidden.
And by the time the truth finally came through that apartment door, there was no way to undo what had happened.
What Do You Think?
What do you think about the family's reaction after Mayang's death?
Was it understandable given their background, or was it deeply unfair to the person Mayang had become?
